Bulleh Shah by Abida Parveen

Abida Parveen ji..she is absolutely amazing, and the Sufiana Kalaam by Bulleh Shah that she often sings is completely out of this world. If only I could make everyone understand what she is saying, I would feel much better! But you see those verses can not be translated...they'll loose their true meaning. But today, I will still try to do so with some verses that have touched me very deeply!!

Ishq te aatish doonhi barabar
Wass ishq da tao tikhera.
Aatish sarhay kak te kanera
Te ishq saarhay dil jera.
Aatish noo paani bujhaway
Te dasso ishq da daaroo kehra?
Aakhay Ghulam Farida, Aakhay Peer Farida
Othay kuch naheen wachda
Jithay Ishq nay la leya dera!

Love and fire are both the same,
Except that Love's heat is more powerful.
Fire burns straw and wood

While Love burns the heart.
Fire is put out by water,
But tell me what is the antidote for Love?
Says Ghulam Farida
There is nothing left in the place
Where Love has set up its abode.

Kaalay maiday kapray te kaala maida bhes,
Gunaahi bharya main pheraan loki kehn darwaish.
Uth Farida soteya, duniya wekhan ja,
Je koi miljaey bakhsya, te tu we wakhsa jaey.

Black are my clothes, and black is my garb.
I roam around full of sins, and people call me a Dervish ( a Sufi wanderer).
Wake up sleeping Farida, go and see the world,
If you find some forgiven man, you shall too be forgiven.

Tasbeeh bohati phair na bahoo.
Iss tasbeeh da kee parhna hoo?
Jera apnay naal hisaab naheen karda
Uday naal hisaab kee karna hoo?

Dont read the tasbeeh (rosary) a lot.
Why should you read it ?
When He doesn't have an account to deal with us,
(i.e. God's blessings are ulimited)
Why should we have an account to deal with him?
( why should our prayers be limited?)

Jay Rab milda nahteya dhoteya noo,
Tay Rab milda dadooan machiyaan noo.
Jay Rab milda jungle pheriyaan,
Tay Rab milda gaeyan wachiaan noo.
Weh Mian Bulleya Rab unhan noo milda
Atay dil day sachian achiyan noo

If God could have been found by those who were clean and bathed,
Then God would have been found by frogs and fish.
If God could have been found by those that roam through forests,
Then God would have been found by cows and calves.
O Bulleya God is found by those
Whose heart is true and pure.

Parh parh ilm hazaar kitaaban
Kadi apnay aap noo parhya naheen.
Ja ja warhday mandir maseeti
Kadi mann apnay wich warhya naheen.
Aewaeen larda shaitan naal bandya,
Kaddi nafs apnay naal larya naheen.
Aakhay Peer Bulleya, aasman hee pharna hai
Jera mann wich wasda unhoon pharya naheen.

You read a thousand books to gain knowledge,
Yet have you ever read what is inside you?
You go running inside Temples and Mosques,
Have you ever visited your own soul?
Futile are all your battles with Satan, oh human,
For you have never tried to fight with your own desires?
Says Peer Bulleh shah, all this is just show-off as,
You have failed to read and reach what is in your heart.

Masjid dha day
Mandir dha day
Dha day jo kuch dhenda.
Par kessay da dil na dhaaween,
Rab dillan wich rehndaey.

Destroy Mosques.
Destroy Temples.
Destroy everything that can be destroyed.
But never break someone's heart,
God lives within.

Respect is all I have for someone who could think about it and write, and the soulful voice who has sung this to the right effect.
